Colin Farrell's Batman villain gets his own TV show

Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb in The Penguin

It’s hard out there for a gangster who just wants to be loved. Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell)—sorry, “Oz Cobb”— is clearly obsessed with his legacy, as this teaser for The Penguin shows; most of the teaser is good ol’ Oz giving a broody little speech about how there was a gangster in his childhood neighborhood who was nice sometimes and people liked him and threw him a parade.

Cobb, on the other hand, seems to prefer being not so nice, at least if the rest of the scenes are anything to go on. Screaming, explosions, guns, sirens, a miserable dark cityscape—you know the drill. We’re back in Matt Reeves’s The Batman Gotham, which doesn’t believe in regularly placed streetlights.

There is no summary or even a logline for The Penguin, which takes place directly after the events of The Batman; there is also no release date, just “fall.” The series does have a pretty excellent supporting cast, with Cristin Milioti, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen all on board.

Matt Reeves is an executive producers, but this show’s writer/showrunner is Lauren LeFranc, who is jumping comic-book universes; she was a producer on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Craig Zobel (The Leftovers, Westworld) directed the first three episodes.

The Penguin makes his debut sometime this fall. icon-paragraph-end
